Sexual Misconduct, the Workplace and The Law

Women and men experience sexual misconduct / harassment in the workplace. What does Alaska law say about it, how do you stop it, when do you report it? How do you even know if you have a case? What is the first thing you should do - and should never do - in this scenario? Our esteemed panelists are prepared to pass along some incredibly helpful information during this conversation. For your sisters & your colleagues who may benefit, this ZOOM is a must.   HOSTED BY: Lori Townsend: Alaska Public Media Kimberly Waller: Women's Power League of Alaska

Discussion on House Bill 5

Did you know Alaska does not define "consent" in state law? This failure has led to repeated harm for Alaskans by making it extremely difficult to prosecute offenders. Consequently, our state has the highest rate of sexual assault in the United States. House Bill 5 aims to correct this vulnerability and make Alaska safer for everyone by empowering our state to be among the strongest advocates for survivors in the nation. There are a few other parts to the bill being discussed this evening.   Check out the live discussion on House Bill 5, streaming live from 7P - 8:15P

The 49th State Women’s Forum: Resilience

About this event Re·sil·ience:1. The capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness.2. The ability of a substance or object to spring back into shape; elasticity. Let's talk resilience. In 2021, many of us have stretched in ways we never thought we could. As we navigate though the COVID pandemic, we've shown up for our families, in our places of business, for friends and loved ones. How do we keep showing up, not only for those who need us, but for ourselves? How do we navigate the unknown? This year's 49th State Women's Forum takes a dive in to what it truly means to be resilient. We will gather in a virtual space to share the issues on our hearts and minds. Our panel discussions will provide valuable insight and up-to-date data on the economy and gender-specific challenges in the for-profit and the nonprofit sector. We'll also make space to collectively address division in our communities, our mental health, wellness, re-invention and more. As always, we'll talk solutions and provide ample resources for all in attendence. We'll celebrate our victories as women, honoring the immeasurable contributions we make within our state and arming ourselves with information for the journey ahead. Together, […]

HB5 is Signed In To Law

We have big reason to celebrate, Alaska! HB 5 is now the law because it was amended into HB 325, which was signed into law. Thank you Representative Geran Tarr- a true champion for women in our state - for inviting WPLAK (pictured - WPLAK's founding Board Chair, Wendi Clark-Manumalo) to the signing ceremony. What an honor to stand beside you in this work, Rep. Tarr. And thanks to all of YOU who took part in our letter writing campaign to get this bill over the finish line. YES!! This bill was a great bipartisan effort. Thank you to Rep. Rasmussen, Senators Hughes, Kiehl, Holland, and Micicche, and Speaker Stutes, Rep. Tuck, and Rep. Drummond, who all played a role in getting the bill unanimously passed passed in both bodies. Per Rep, Tarr, this bill does several important things, including from our HB 5 - rewriting the consent definition to a yes means yes affirmative definition. Now, the law says consent is a freely given, reversible agreement specific to the conduct at issue. It criminalizes the act of rape by fraud. These horrific acts were not previously prosecutable. That's not all - it has the last piece of a multi-year […]

HB 174 is Signed Into Law

Did you catch this last night on the news? Governor Mike Dunleavy has signed SB 174, a law that prohibits discrimination against Black hairstyles in schools (also known as the Crown Act). The bill was introduced by Sen. David Wilson, R-Wasilla, and cross-sponsored by Sen. Elvi Gray-Jackson, D-Anchorage. School dress codes would be prohibited from banning hairstyles like afros, cornrows and braids. Schools would be barred from requiring students to alter their hair. Legislative committees heard testimony from Alaskans who had experienced discrimination due to their hairstyles, in addition to testimony about the dangers and pain of using chemical relaxers. The new law also prohibits schools from banning students who wish to wear traditional and cultural regalia at graduation ceremonies.

Mentorship Spotlight: Pipeline Vocal Project and Dawn McClain

Among our mentorship matches for 2022, WPLAK was proud to execute our first ever pairing in the performing arts! As advocates for the arts, this was a total treat! The dynamic ladies of Pipeline Vocal Project were paired with well-known songstress, Dawn McClain. Click the video below to learn more about their experience and hear why musicians need mentors, too. As for the next round of pairings, we've taken some time to re-imagine our program and evaluate our offerings. Like all nonprofits, we want to make sure we're meeting the needs of the Alaskans we serve. Our next opportunity is scheduled to launch at the top of 2023 #MentorshipMatters
