Mentorship
DistinguiSHEd Mentors Alaska
Mentorship | Networking | Collaboration
Women’s Power League of Alaska and the Young Professionals Group (YPG’s) have joined forces to help provide Alaska’s ambitious women leaders with a next-level mentorship opportunity. Are you in need of a mentor to act as a sounding board, or a though partner? Maybe you just want to strengthen your professional connections and develop a solid network. Read on!
By definition: “Mentorship is the influence, guidance, or direction given by a mentor. In an organizational setting, a mentor influences the personal and professional growth of a mentee”. Mentorship can happen in many ways – it can be a short, one-time exchange, an organic relationship that develops over time, a pairing that takes place within a professional setting, or through a program like this one.
DistinguiSHEd Mentors Alaska – formerly the 20-Something Mentorship Project – connects industry thought-leaders and established professionals with mentees (no age restrictions). Through this 4-month program (May -> August), mentees are paired with a mentor in their field of choice to assist them with a professional goal. This could include finding a bigger role within their respective industry, launching a business, switching industries all together – or something else.
This program also includes additional opportunities for networking as mentees will be asked to attend a series of events (monthly) – complimentary with your one-time dues of $100.00.
Here’s how it works: Applicants can fill out an application (below). If selected, we will contact you with information about your mentor and walk you through the process of getting started (this includes a mandatory welcome meeting). We want to meet you!
The application period for 2024 mentorships begins Monday, May 6 and ends Monday, July 1.

Professional Development
Alaska has the highest rate of women entrepreneurs, per capita. That’s right, our state’s economy is greatly dependent upon our contributions. We are industry leaders, activists, educators, policy makers, mothers, artists, founders, innovators, and often, the bread winners. Naturally, there is an ongoing need for collaboration and professional development among women looking to connect with like-minded dynamos.
WPLAK provides unique opportunities for women with entrepreneurial spirits to come together. Through a host of facilitated gatherings included Mastermind sessions, workshops and the presentation of women-centric data, we help to disseminate valuable resources and create spaces of support for women at any phase of her career.

Community Building
Communities are strong when its citizens have equity. Our communities are the places we work, live and play. As leaders within our communities, we realize the power of philanthropy, volunteerism and informed decision making. We recognize the importance of showing up for one another, even if just to say, “you are not alone, you are heard, you are supported”.
WPLAK seeks to help build strong communities and stand beside the many organizations and individuals who have been entrenched in this work for decades. Our community offerings help to foster belonging, thoughtfully engaging Alaskans around race, gender, the wage gap, sexual assault / violence, civil rights, our state’s economy and more. We are a non-partisan organization and we do not lobby. However, we help to mobilize Alaskans around policy that will improve the lives of women and families. We advocate for activism, for the betterment of our communities and our gender, and stand prepared to create true and lasting change for the next generation of Alaskan women.
